One of the largest cargo railroads in the world, MRS Logística manages a railway network of 1,643 km, which covers more than 100 municipalities in the states of Minas Gerais (MG), Rio de Janeiro (RJ) and São Paulo (SP), which places it in a very relevant economic position, playing a key role in national logistics. This region concentrates about half of Brazilian GDP, connecting regions that produce mineral and agricultural commodities, in addition to some of the main industrial parks in the country to the largest ports in the Southeast region. The performance frontier has also been expanded in recent years: new routes were created originating in other regions of MG and SP, serving the production of Mato Grosso do Sul (MS) and new routes for transporting general cargo, allowing movement, for example, between the ports of Rio and Santos and highlighting the logistical solutions enabled by the railroad, adding savings and sustainability.
With diversified production, MRS transports products related to the mining industry (iron ore, coal and coke) and general cargo (agricultural commodities, steel products, pulp, containers, among others). More comprehensive logistics solutions are also included in the Company’s portfolio, such as the planning and development of multimodal solutions (using multiple means of transport), in addition to customized rail services.
Based on the spreading of an innovation culture that permeates all areas and the intensive use of technology, MRS is proud to have indicators comparable to those of the most efficient and safe North American and European railways, in items such as energy efficiency, availability and reliability of assets, safety and productivity.
Bearing in mind the importance of its operation, the Company understands that it is mandatory to have an ongoing commitment to the identification, prevention, and mitigation of impacts caused to the community and the environment. To this end, it continually invests in the safety of the population in the communities surrounding the railway network (learn more here) and takes on the challenge of promoting social transformation in these areas. Actions on this front are detailed here.
In addition to social issues, MRS also has a strong commitment to adopting the best corporate governance practices and related to the reduction of environmental impacts (more information here), and the Company was the first domestic railway certified by IBAMA (acronym in Portuguese of Brazilian Institute of the Environment). The concern with ESG issues is also extended as a requirement for its suppliers (access here).
MRS is a publicly-held company, listed on B3, in the Over-the-Counter Market, with share capital comprising common and preferred shares. More details here.
Created in 1996, when the federal government transferred the management of the domestic railway system to the private sector, MRS entered into the early renewal of the operation concession in 2022, starting a new phase of significant expansion for the Company in the coming years, as detailed in the chapter Operation Concession (access here).
Almost 20% of all Brazilian exports and a third of all cargo transported by train in the country passes through MRS rails.
