For MRS, health, well-being and safety go hand in hand and are part of the drivers of its success. With a focus on human potential, the Company continuously performs actions to promote health, physical and emotional well-being and to prevent illness, focusing on employees, their families and dependents. The Occupational Health and Safety Management covers 100% of the employees, own and third-party, of all activities and locations.
The initiatives also included several awareness campaigns and realistic simulations in workshops and maintenance yards (some with the presence of public safety and security agencies, such as the Fire Department, Civil Defense, Environment Department and Military Police).
MRS is proud to, as a result of its frequent efforts, sustain occupational safety indexes compatible with the best world practices. In 2022, the Accident Rate/Total Recorded Incident Rate (TRIR – acronym in Portuguese) was 0.74, and, once more, with no occurrences of permanent injuries or fatalities. Despite the rate being higher than the previous year, which was 0.63, 2022 result can be considered a market benchmark. It should be noted that in the last 13 years, this rate dropped 91%.

Personal accident rate
(MRS + contractors)
The highest incidence of accidents with employees is caused by non-compliance with pre-established procedures or inadequate supervision. Managers are guided to encourage teams to report 100% of events, emphasizing the importance of identifying and pointing out risks as a way of preventing loss and damage. Different channels are offered by MRS to encourage communications by employees and third parties:
CRP inputs through an online form that can be completed by the reporting person or by a designated employee. The registration of personal incidents is done in a specific system.
forms available at the service fronts to meet the needs of employees who do not feel confident enough to perform an activity
via email [email protected] or [email protected] or tool-free (0800). The channel can be used by all stakeholders and is disclosed on MRS website, intranet and the official channels on the Company’s social media.
To offer health support to its employees, MRS maintains seven sites with occupational physicians and nursing technicians, in strategic regions of its railway network. Some of them have a structure to perform occupational tests, such as audiometry and visual acuity. An administrative area controls and manages the Company’s indicators and targets in the area, as well as budgets and planning of actions involving health.
Through S+ health management system, together with other reports extracted from specific systems, MRS has a broad view of the health of its employees. Occupational tests are carried out annually by 100% of employees. In 2022, 2,306 tests were carried out in distant locations, through mobile service (in company). 4,199 other occupational exams were also made, including admission, return to work, change in occupational risk and dismissal tests.
MRS believes that continuous training and qualification in safety contributes decisively to the improvement of the Company’s performance in accident rate indexes and in the identification of hazards that could lead to losses or damages. All new employees undergo safety training in which topics such as risks inherent to the work, emergency situations, firefighting, ergonomics, importance of using PPE, among others, are addressed. Before accessing the Company’s premises, it is also necessary to watch a video with instructions on how to travel safely, the risks involved, among others. In addition, campaigns, lectures, events and the distribution of materials on relevant topics in occupational health and safety are often carried out. Annually, the SIPATMA (Internal Week for the Prevention of Accidents at Work and the Environment – acronym in Portuguese) is held.
In 2022, reinforcing its concern with safety, MRS inaugurated its first Safety “Dojo” at the Estaleiro de Solda in Barra do Piraí (RJ). “Dojo” is a practical training center focused on the risks of the Company’s production process. The objective is to emphasize the concepts of personal and railway safety, the environment and occupational health. Among other topics, the facility addresses, in a rapid learning circuit, workplace risks, mutual care, safety mechanisms, use of PPE, applicable regulatory standards, ergonomics, fire prevention and fighting, among others. Another four training centers are planned to open in 2023. More information is available on MRS YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZQDjcjJ3Ck.
During the period, with an average 53.2 training hours for each employee, operational/personal safety training and courses for qualification and improvement of the activities performed in the most diverse positions were provided. In operational roles, the Company offers, through Academia MRS (learn more here) aptitude certification processes for performing the activity. In various positions, employees are only allowed to perform their duties if they are duly certified. For train drivers, a constant performance monitoring is carried out through the Driving Information System, which allows on-time monitoring via telemetry. Activities identified as non-compliant with the desired standard are corrected with in refresher and/or improvement courses. In extreme cases, there may be loss of certification, with the need for full requalification training by the employee before returning to duty.

MRS holds relevant programs to help prevent illness, encourage quality of life and well-being and mitigate occupational risks. Among them, these stand out:
in a current and dynamic model, implemented in 2022, which allows the monitoring, prevention and stabilization of occupational hearing losses. A total of 4,596 audiometric tests were performed during the period, as well as an audiological anamnesis according to the criteria in Annex II of NR7. The program was supplemented with individual treatment actions, lectures and hearing conservation campaigns, participation in SIPATMA (Internal Week for the Prevention of Accidents at Work and the Environment – acronym in Portuguese) and in DDSS (Daily Dialogue on Health and Safety – acronym in Portuguese).
enables to identify vulnerable people and offer support and treatment. In 2022, 4,823 PPAD tests were performed out across MRS and new measuring equipment was purchased, the BAS-20 breathalyzers. The new equipment arrives as an important control tool for work safety and occupational health management. The way it was developed allows for a fully autonomous alcohol screening process, providing more agility, accuracy, security, and reliability to the process.
monitoring of people with chronic diseases such as dyslipidemia, cardiovascular diseases, obesity, diabetes, among others. In 2022, 567 employees showing changes in their tests were identified, thus receiving individual guidance during periodic control.
With the control of the Covid-19 pandemic, in 2022, MRS reinforced its focus on the mental and emotional health of its employees, family members and dependents, without neglecting actions to promote physical well-being and the prevention of illness, offering therapeutic care with psychologists and nutritionists and encouraging the practice of physical activities with the Gympass.
A total of 1,012 people have already used the therapy services, 65% in Minas Gerais and with an average age of 33 years. 7,847 video calls were made and 108,302 messages were exchanged during the appointments. Regarding the nutritional monitoring, 306 participants received nutritional guidance. About the Gympass, there were 3,048 members in December 2022, of which 2,058 were employees, 133 were interns or apprentices and 842 were dependents.
Aiming to continuously encourage its employees to seek this quality of life, the Company developed several actions during the period, including:
