Established in 2015 by the UN, SDGs aim to encourage global actions to promote prosperity and well-being, protect the environment and tackling climate change. With joint action by governments, civil society and other global partners, it is expected to achieve 17 goals and 169 targets by 2030.
MRS understands that the participation of the business sector is key for achieving the 2030 Agenda. In the materiality process performed by the company, SDGs directly related to material topics and initiatives and actions conducted by MRS were identified. Materiality is directly related to seven objectives and nine targets of 2030 Agenda.
METARGET: By 2030, substantially increase the number of youth and adults who have relevant skills, including technical and vocational skills, for employment, decent jobs and entrepreneurship.
MATERIAL TOPIC: Employee training and development
MRS APPROACH: MRS promotes the training of its employees in terms of qualification, improvement, certification and development, establishing a knowledge trail for each position. Professionals are prepared for their current assignments and for new career challenges. Learn more in Employees.
METARGET: By 2030, double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency
MATERIAL TOPIC: Fuel management and fleet eco-efficiency.
MRS APPROACH: Energy efficiency of each type of cargo (ore, agricultural and general cargo) is monitored on a standalone basis, and annual improvement targets are defined for each one, as well as initiatives to reduce fuel consumption, according to the different characteristics of the trains in the fleet. METARGET: Protect labor rights and promote safe and secure working environments for all workers, including migrant workers, in particular women migrants, and those in precarious employment.
MATERIAL TOPIC: Occupational health and safety and human and labor rights.
MRS APPROACH: All Company’s employees are covered by formal health and safety committees. Safety management model is based on ISO 45001 and the (internal) Safety and Environment Policy. MRS also promotes the identification, assessment and control of the risks inherent to its employees’ activities to promote the reduction of deviations, incidents, accidents and occupational diseases. METARGET: By 2030, empower and promote the social, economic and political inclusion of all, irrespective of age, sex, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion or economic or other status
MATERIAL TOPIC: Diversity, equity and inclusion
MRS APPROACH: MRS adopts priority pillars of diversity and strategic objectives associated with gender equity, ethnic-racial representation and people with disabilities. The Company also maintains a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion registered in its Organizational Guideline on Diversity and Non-Discrimination and expressed as a principle of its New Strategic Framework. METARGET: By 2030, enhance inclusive and sustainable urbanization and capacity for participatory, integrated and sustainable human settlement planning and management in all countries. By 2030, reduce the adverse per capita environmental impact of cities, including by paying special attention to air quality and municipal and other waste management.
MATERIAL TOPIC: Relations with surrounding communities and Risk management
MRS APPROACH: Process of relationship with the community aiming to seek shared solutions to mitigate the negative impacts of railway operations. Investments in the new concession, signed in 2022, provide for action plans for deficiencies raised. Learn more at Society.
METARGET: Integrate climate change measures into national policies, strategies and planning.
MATERIAL TOPIC: Climate change and atmospheric and greenhouse gas emissions.
MRS APPROACH: Since 2019, the Company carries out inventories of greenhouse gas emissions. In continuous evolution, it started Scope 3 inventories in 2021. With the data mapped and the quantification of its direct and indirect emissions, MRS has the opportunity for improvements related to the efficiency of operational activities and the minimization of its negative impacts related to climate changes. METARGET: Substantially reduce corruption and bribery in all their forms. Develop effective, accountable and transparent institutions at all levels.
MATERIAL TOPIC: Ethics and anti-corruption practices, corporate governance and customer relationship management.
MRS APPROACH: Since 2017, the Company has maintained the Integrity Program, which includes conduct policies and anti-corruption standards and is introduced to new employees on the onboarding day. MRS also has a Code of Conduct and Ethics, including for third parties, to reinforce the Company’s values and integrity rules; and a Hot Line with the Audit, a confidential channel available for employees to clarify doubts and make complaints related to conduct in violation of the Code.
